Hello Otland,

I know there are some old posts floating around about dedicated servers but I wanted to hear a 2014 updated version of the topic from the experts here on Otland.

From my own research (by checking what other Ots on Otservlist are hosted by) it seems that there a quite a lot of people using OVH.

https://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_servers/

That link lists a variety of different OVH servers specified for different purposes: Enterprise/Hosting. Which one would you recommend for a real map OT. Would you recommend a different host instead?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, when it comes to servers I'm still very confused but trying to learn as best I can.

Buy kimsufi powerd by OVH. Cheaper and have great ddos protection: http://www.kimsufi.com/en/about-ks/index.xml#protection

Thank you Printer. I was using SoYouStart (US equivalent of Kimsufi I believe) before but my server was already beginning to lag around 70-80 players online. I think if I want to be serious I will have to pay the money for a better host because Kimsufi doesn't look like it has very powerful servers. But I could be wrong, I don't understand the different processors and cores/threads, what makes one server more powerful than another. I just compare the specs and use my basic understanding of 2 > 1.

These are the specs of my current server on SoYouStart (running an TFS 0.4) but it get's pretty laggy. If there is a better server on Kimsufi that would be great because the OVH website server is like $180 after taxes. I'll look again and try to learn better what makes one server faster than another.

I forgot to also mention that I'm planning to host in Europe this time, it seems to have a larger Tibia population.

I don't think it's wrong with the kimsufi. Mby your server is causing the lagg :P

It's impossible your server lagging with 70-80 players on SoYouStart, since this handle something about 300 players without problems. I think some script in your server could be the problem here as Printer said.

Yes maybe you guys right, could it be the engine as well? Or are lags based mainly from the scripting side? Also, do you have experience from hosting a server with 300 players online or is that an estimate based on the specs of the server?

I'm using rev 5916 for an 8.6 server.

First of all you could talk if this is Global or not, since Global have a hard map size and need a good hardware too.
Yes, TFS 0.4 have more Memory Leak than TFS 1.0 which is very optimized, but surely the cause don't is that.
Try searching some script which could be the problem in your datapack.

I've seen people experience lag on that server once they start to reach 100 players do its certainly the rev. You could try optimizing the scripts to see if that gives you a benefit.

The difference between cores and threads is simple. Its a technology by Intel called hyper threading that creates two logical cores per physical core. This way the OS can dispatch instructions to two threads per core instead of just one.
