Hi guys, for a few months i've noticed my RME is too laggy so i've been closing it and refusing to map. I ignored it like this because i knew i was going to wipe my pc soon and just assumed it was some user error that would be cleaned up.

Well, here i am after wiping my pc and RME still laggs.
I've used clean OTA RME and a few new/old/dirty/clean versions of RME, all exactly the same problem.

Specifically it's most noticeable when zoomed out, i can't actually zoom out to comfortable levels and continue to map, if i do anything it has to be zoomed in to uncomfortable levels. I wouldn't be able to use a large brush and paint a small continent for example. It's like 5+ seconds of input latency and the whole app is pretty much unresponsive.

It happens on any map file big or small and seems to be related to high detail areas of the map such as the jungle, but also low detail places that contain snow or lava. If i zoom in very close then there's 0 lag but it's not very practical.

The only thing that bears any correlation is that i've upgraded my GPU to a 7900xt recently, but i can't confirm if the lagg appeared after this or not.

Some inb4's,
checked windows performance settings
change rme to use dedicated gpu
messed with rme settings, no settings seem to help (suggestions welcome)
clean compiled OTA RME, no change
updated drivers
checked resource usage (rme uses basically nothing, just a bit of ram to load the map)
installed on nvme
not using hd sprites, infact everything is vanilla
yes i am aware that rme has always lagged when zoomed out and this is much, much worse

pc specs
7600x,7900xt,32gb,nvme

It's hard to tell if you actually experience an issue or its just how RME is working. If I open RL map on my pc and zoom out too much on (new) venore then it's a powerpoint presentation... while the same zoom on a desert or an empty (blank) area works fine.

Could you take a screenshot to show at what zoom level you can comfortably work on RME? And at what zoom it starts to be laggy? or just share this:

And what map

It's not hard for me to tell though because it's night and day difference, i've been mapping for a very long time so i'm aware of the normal lags associated with zooming out and large maps and even using low power laptops. The lag happens even on an empty map where i paint an area of lava. It's not the usual behaviour at all.
I'm usually scrolling out very far to look at my whole area, like 15-20% sometimes i would even accidentally zoom too far to like 5% and it's always been fine, laggy but fine because zooming back in was quite fast. Now i can't even get to 5%, rme becomes unresponsive for at least a few minutes (at which point i closed it, idk if it would recover).

My usual mapping usually happens around 55-85% but i can't get much past 80% anymore and at around 60% it's unusable for most parts of my map. Going under 60% and i risk RME becoming unresponsive

find in options 'mem cached sprites'.
I always found that helpful.
tried that on and off, has no effect :(

Okay, do you play any games? Or perhaps you've done some benchmark of your PC?
Just to see if your PC actually works fine with other programs / games.
Perhaps do a benchmark and compare your GPU results to what the internet says you should have.
do you have strong enough power supply for your new graphics card? You sure you've connected it right to the power supply?
It's hard to find the problem but if you changed ur GPU then I'd start from there

If you dont, you may try to use x64 version of rme

Some of the questions might be silly but since I am not you and I don't have your pc how am I suppose to know 😅

I've used x64 and it's the same issue, literally nothing to do with RME even slightly affects the issue so i dont even think RME is the culprit

and ye my pc is fine lol XD i game pretty regularly and am quite 'in the know' so pretty much can rule out my hardware, i use my pc for VR and LLMs/stable diffusion, it's an absolute monster
I'm going to wipe my pc again with the assumption that my windows install is corrupted somehow in a way that so far only affects rme. I haven't done much since wiping it other than play games and OT dev so i wouldn't really know if its a wider issue.

If i wipe again and still have this issue then the only thing left to assume is that my hardware has some kind of bug or quirk that is especially noticeable in rme and i would have no idea how to proceed

Can you give a link to the rme you're using?
and whatever tibia client version?

I kinda wanna test it out on my pc now. lol
Bonus points if you can give files for a map you've attempted to 'paint'.

i'm currently trying to use OTA RME, it's my usual go-to Release Release 4.1.2 · OTAcademy/RME (https://github.com/OTAcademy/RME/releases/tag/4.1.2)
but this issue persists on any version of RME i have tried, i think i tried 5 or 6, including one packed by my friend that he uses without issue
i've tried version 7.6 and 10.98 maps, no difference

I can't send my map for obvious reasons and i didn't save my paintings lol XD so i've just tried it out on the default map for TFS 1.4 here forgottenserver/data/world at 1.4 · otland/forgottenserver (https://github.com/otland/forgottenserver/tree/1.4/data/world)

I need a zoom level of 120% to have a smooth experience when going to the town of "Rhyves", this is the worst it has performed so far and i wouldn't even expect this level of performance from a 10 year old laptop.

Did a quick small test, and don't see an issue on my machine.. aside from the replace thing seemingly running into a limit, before needing to left click again?

At least at this point you can rule it a local issue, I think.
I just used whatever default settings it downloaded with.

-- Edit.
Oh! Do you have the minimap enabled?
It lags me quite a bit / does strange things when I enabled that.
Closing it, and it's fine again.

omfg watching that video has hurt my soul, bro it's been so long that i've forgotten how smooth rme is lol
minimap is disabled :)

Here's me trying to do what you did at the same zoom level, notice even the mouse laggs quite badly inside rme here, the recording is fine

thanks for confirming that it's local, i'll reinstall windows again before digging deeper

did a proper reformat of my drive and with a newer version of windows- issue persists lol

i guess there's something wrong that seemingly only affects rme which is absolutely wild

same issue here tough it was only me
whats your pc specs?

i've just reformatted AGAIN but to windows 10 (previously 11) and still the same issue. Maybe its a very specific hardware issue

Installing an older GPU driver has 'fixed' the issue. hopefully a future driver will fix it for real

im full amd atm

im using a ryzen 7 5700x
and a RX 6650 xt

yeah for me the RME works better on an old pc without GPU than on this PC.
im using a very old RME version since the latest ones are unusable.

Can you upload a screenshot of the issue? Can't tell if is this, but always disable show lighting effects when zooming-out (shift + L).
I also never import large areas with ctrl + c. With large I mean pieces of maps with 1000 * 1000 sqms or so, it should be done by pieces.

With a screenshot maybe I can tell more ideas to reduce lag, but RME from OTA has some methods on its usage, to performance better.

The fact that the gpu driver change fixed it, would indicate that the driver is at fault, (I would stay away from windows 11 as long as possible too)

The only other possibility I can think of, is if the map editor needed a certain version of a lib and you are using a different version (sort of how people always need a million different version of .net runtimes).

wich driver are u using tho?

it was working for me on driver version 23.12.1, it's pretty old but i chose it because its the latest stable driver for VR, i suspect any driver older than 6 months will work, because this issue has only appeared in the last few months

RME used to lag for me as well, just bought more RAM and solved the problem. I had 16 before, but running server + RME and a browser with 50 tabs was a no-go 😅

It naturally stutters when zoomed out too much, I always switch view to Minimap (SHIFT+ E) when zooming out, it doesn't stutter that much.

What @Xikini said also might help, although I don't notice any difference on my machine.
