Should Tibia finally evolve into 3D?

It’s time to explore 3D, even as an option?

Just an idea… What if Tibia went 3D one day?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been thinking lately and wanted to throw a little idea out there — not a suggestion to change the game tomorrow, but more of a “what if” to spark some imagination and hear your thoughts.

Tibia was released in 1997. That’s over 25 years ago — more than a quarter of a century!
And honestly, the fact that it’s still alive, loved, and played in 2025 is a huge achievement in itself. But looking around the gaming world now, it makes me wonder:

Could Tibia evolve into 3D — without losing its soul?
I’m not talking about turning it into some AAA open-world RPG.

Just imagine the same top-down view, the same gameplay we all love — but with a modern 3D touch:
more visual depth, dynamic lighting, animated environments, better spell effects.

Something that keeps the core feeling, but speaks to newer generations too.

Because let’s face it — if we want Tibia to grow, to attract new players, and expand the community we love… maybe it’s time to dream a little bigger.

There’s no right or wrong here — just a space to share thoughts, dreams, or even cool 3D concept art if you’ve seen any.

Let’s have a real, open discussion :) .

nope, tibia is not tibia in 3d, 3d introduces different matrix, which is different mechanics, different limits (not tibia)

I get that, and yeah — 3D changes things.
But I was thinking more like visual depth, not gameplay changes. Same grid, same feel — just modern look...
Wouldn’t hurt to imagine it, right?

I mean there are like two games, one is literally Tibia 3D and the other one is very much based on Tibia, also in 3D. Don't remember the titles.

Fake 3D (3D effects etc) should be totally possible.

Real 3D like say Minecraft is only possible as an admin or spectator and would waste A LOT of resources both for server and client.
So it's possible to make real 3D spectating for like a casting streamer or something to tell you what's going on, which I think would be awesome, and not hard to implement except for the client part (should probably be implemented as a new client made in a 3D game engine, which can only spectate, not play).
In fact the cast part should probably be its own application to not waste so much resources for the players, which will require a lot of memory for TFS users (two loaded maps on one server), but it's still possible.
Using my own server architecture, the memory usage would be about 1/3rd or less compared to TFS.
And at some point I will probably work on this if my server becomes a success among players first such that 3D casting by streamers will be in demand.

But for everyone to play using real 3D is not possible without rewriting everything and being prone to hacking like in other 3D games.
That's my opinion anyway after some investigation (I had a dream at night about Tibia 3D a few years ago and thought about it).

Unless by 3D you just mean that you can view the world in a 3D perspective, which is similar to what I just described by the admin/spectator tool.
Yeah, you can do stuff like that, but not worth it imo except for as a spectator tool.

I really think it's time for a skyrim-like Tibia.
If I had more time, I would work on it myself.

I want to post a update here and say I was wrong about "full 3D" not being possible. It's actually completely feasible to make Tibia in 3D it seems to me now AND make it compatible with an extended OTServ based engine or otherwise. I am currently only using Open Tibia's 2D sprites, and it still looks a bit weird, but using some clever tricks you can do anything, you could probably replace some 2D sprites with 3D models as well if you really wanted to (I won't).

Is it possible to make a dragon fly high in the sky in 3D like in some Pixar movie, well, lets be realistic still, probably not, but you can actually do a lot, and I will hopefully be able to demonstrate this in the reasonable near future (again to reiterate: I probably won't be using 3D models, but should be completely possible to do so actually).

In my opinion, it could evolve into a hack'n'slash game on a new engine... which will probably never happen. In an interview, when asked if Tibia would be in 3D, one of the creators of CipSoft smiled and said ‘never’. The game was inspired by Ultima 7.

Ultima is 3D now.

Think the OT community had a project out 15 years or so that was 3D I remember seeing on OTfans, it lots of interest but the project didn't last long once it went in beta.

That’s a really interesting thought! A subtle 3D upgrade could modernize visuals while keeping classic gameplay intact. I’d love to see dynamic lighting and spell effects without losing Tibia’s charm.
