Linux terminal to open

How, in Linux Ubuntu, do I make the terminal pop up? I went to my drive and searched "terminal" and then did an "open in terminal" but it just opened then closed! How do you log in to the root user? Whenever I try to log in to the root user it does not let me switch user names.
