what you mean with custom server? just custom map and quest or stuffs like systems/sprites/etc?

protocol doesnt matter, custom client means that you can use 7.6 protocol with almost all 8.7 features etc
also best idea would be writing own(or fixing yatc) so you wont have any limits, you would be able tocreate unlimited skills, spell exhaust bars or whatever you want

yeah, you can inject it using dll but its not best solution
also cip client is "a bit" weak, slow, ugly, misses many config options like hotkey sets etc
