If you want ease-of-use or don't know that much about computers: Windows 7

If you want to run a server: Linux, or Windows 2003 if you like windows

well, for your home pc I prefer any version of windows and for a server linux (ONLY if you know something about it!) else windows server 2003 or 2008 (2008 is pretty good and got a better protection against Denial of Service)
