Alright, so this has been bothering me quite some time which is why I have created this thread.
Day by day when I check on the forums I see people being hated for copying&pasting files (map parts, scripts....) from the download section to their server and trying to run it. This makes me sad and arises once more the feeling that somewhere down the line we have lost our path to the "OPEN"-Tibia what back then we considered our Utopia. Alot of people seem to have forgotten what imho OT once stood for: The idea of anyone - no matter his/her skill - being able to make his own OTS. This is why we have the download section. To have anyone enjoy OT to their hearts content. Some will be able to put more time&effort in their projects, while others will perhaps just copy&paste a datapack and make it ready to run. The new guys will probably start off by copying more content than creating their own and in the end their server will surely for some veterans feel like copy&pasted when they play it. But shall it matter? I think not! Everybody in some way puts their hearts blood in a project and no matter the result he will most likely be proud of his "work" when the project is finalised, no matter how much has acctually changed when we look at the grand scale. But then again it shouldn't matter! OT was meant to bring the joy of creating servers to ANYONE and on the way perhaps to deliver some useful coding knowledge. I can recall when I was working on my first OTS when I was like 10 y/o and I asked my parents to buy the cheapest VPS (7$/m) I could find back then for me. Hell yeah it was one crappy vps and it was laggy but me and my friends had so much fun playing and developing our server that it shouldn't matter. What I'm trying to remind you off, is that OT can be enjoyed even on the lowest level of skill, that's what it was designed to be. OPEN to ANYONE. And directed at those who are complaining about the use of resources: They were released to be USED by the community so why not use them? What for you might look like some piece of crap might just be something valuable to another person.
I feel that the community has shifted to the idea of "try creating the perfect" (which even is advised not to strive for in the "How to make a successfull ots thread by @Leftwing) and thus looks down on any projects that seem to have rather been copy&pasted. The question is WHY would you do that? Instead try to encourage the people to add more custom content to it and work on it a bit more. It's not like you need to play the server. I'd even say 80% from the comments to a project is from ppl who wouldnt even consider to play it. And yes, there are people who are only looking to dl&run and profit from it. But then again we know how picky our community has become so I wouldnt assume they would make too much money from it. And if they do, let them. It's the players that decide wheter to donate money to the server or not. In the end Love will always be stronger than hate, so let's go back to being a community again, not some shattered individuals :) In the end we all love the same thing: OT <3

Kind regards,
Damon

My personal opinion on people complaining about "copying&pasting files (map parts, scripts....)" is that it isn't creative, open-tibia is in my eyes a community where one should be able to decide whether or not it is available for others or not.
If I made a 100% custom map and then have people rip it or track it, would I be hated if I complained about something that could have taken me years to make? I'd fucking hope not.

I get what you're saying though as the community definitely feels closed more than open a lot of the time.

Heya there mate and thanks for your reply,
In no way did I mean to encourage the usage of thieved resources but those which were released by their respective owners for public use anyway :) Speaking of the "creative" aspect I would say that is not for us to decide. As I have stated earlier everybody will work on his project with their own pace/effort/ambitions so all we can do is respect what either do. One doesnt have to play it, one doesnt have to like it. But respect and motivation is still something anyone should be able to give to others :p

Cheers,
Damon

That's what happened with me when i made my thread about looking for a hoster
i think i'm not that prof to make a tibia server from Nothing i had to copy and download then edit

To be honest, I really dont have much problems with it if they copy but if they copy it it should looks good and not so bad...

it's not so bad just wait i'll open it in my pc for a while and i'll let u in and u'll see if it's good or bad

@Mr Osama when making this thread I was also thinking of your thread.
Nonetheless this topic isnt about wheter your server is good or bad so please stick to the topic :)

I think we all hang around otland for different reason..
Some for the money they can and do make from short to long term servers, projects or gigs.
Some for the notoriety they get for releasing their work, fixing / updating existing works or creating new things.
Some for the education they receive from developers, artists, writers & dreamers from all over the world.
While others are here for a few of the above mentioned or none at all.

You really can't blame the people who take advantage or to some extent exploit everything this community has to offer
as most of us are offering it for free.

Idealistically it would be great if everyone in the Open Tibia community would collectively contribute, but that is not a
realistic expectation since not many people have the cognitive process to be a writer, coder or artist.

Some people are either admittingly lazy or just haven't realized their full potential...

Your attention shouldn't be what everyone else gets out of this community but what your getting out of it.

In life it is better to focus on the positive things than the negative :)

I think it's definitely wrong to go to a server thread and post hate on it if you don't play it.
But I think it's perfectly fine for players to deliver criticism on a project they are playing, especially if it was advertised as something and ended up being something else entirely.

With that said, I see nothing wrong with copy&pasting help you get on Otland or elsewhere. But I do find a problem if literally EVERYTHING is copy and pasted. Not because the person didn't do anything themselves, but because I would find it boring seeing everything again.

It's why I don't care for CTF or other small mini-games in every new server. It's been done, I've seen it and done it. But let's say you take that CTF script, and add a way to incorporate your own spin on it. Then you have something that is somewhat different than what someone is used to.

But honestly it comes down to personal preference. Some people don't like change and want the basic formula or else they dislike it. Some people want change and dislike the basic formula. To each their own.
