What does Sha1 help?

Well i got hacked while beta testing my ot lol... So now im going to change plain to sha1.
What does sha1 help, how does my server get more secure, and where can i edit passwords etc. without fucking up the connection to my database?

Well, if people get access to your database somehow it wont be as easy for them to get the password from each account, if you use hashing that is.
