why does tibia use bmp?

I would guess it's because PNG is newer.
PNG wasn't big until some years after Tibia first opened, so they used BMP.

Also, CipSoft already has a system to process BMP images into their game.
There's no need totally revise the whole system for a very small/unnoticeable difference.

Again, I could be wrong, that is just my guess.

Maybe they used mspaint to make first graphics and later they just used bmp format as in paint times?
or they were just students and decided to don't change that?
