why port 7171?

Hello everybody.
Just curious. Why most (if not all) open tibia servers (and rl tibia) are using port 7171?

It must be one port and thats the one they chose. There is no real reason. Aslong as it doesn't conflict with other stuff its ok.

Indeed, what Bahamut says; you are free to choose any port number you desire, but you should take notice of any ports that are already being used on the machine.

For example; port 1 to 1024 should be avoided at any time, because most of the ports within this range are already bound to a certain type of application or networking in general.
Ports from 1025 to 65535 are generally free to use, but be aware that (since everyone can assign port numbers as they like) some port numbers might be taken already.
