Hey OTLand, me and my girlfriend are planning on moving to New Zealand soon, but I was wanting to know some questions..

1) Where is the best place for an immigrant to live?
2) Who is the best ISP for New Zealand?
3) How do New Zealanders treat immigrants from the US?

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon.

where peroxide (alex) lives is quite touristy afaik so that could probably be a decent place to live with a decent nightlife and day atmosphere.
Also pretty sure the NZ people love anyone who isn't a descendant of maori's ;d ahshahsahhsa

Best way to find out is ask benis and peroxide.
New zealand is struggling for work - most people who go to live there from England etc are generally retired millionaires. So if you plan on moving there, it will be a struggle. Better still - tourist villages etc are even better for work i guess.

Well if you're moving here then I'd hope you have something lined up to support yourself i.e a job or something lined up.
The work here at the moment is really all about construction or I.T, so hopefully you have qualifications for either.

Anyway, I'll try to answer some of your questions.

Q: Where is the best place for an immigrant to live?
A: One of the major cities if you're looking for work. Our major cities are Wellington (Capital, North Island), Auckland (North Island), Christchurch (Not long ago suffered a pretty big earthquake that destroyed a lot of it's city, South Island). If you're moving here and still hope for a lot of events like Concerts etc then you maybe in luck, we do get a lot of concerts etc but most Concerts are in Auckland, thankfully it doesn't take long to get there.

p.s enjoy the earthquakes when you're here, we get them all the time, I'm unsure if you tend to get on the wrong-side of the law but our police are pretty easy going. A lot easier than the U.S

Q: Who is the best ISP for New Zealand?
A: Definitely not Telecom, I'm currently with Orcon (99$/month for unlimited bandwidth), now by moving here you should definitely not expect great internet service but it's in working order.

Q: How do New Zealanders treat immigrants from the US?
A: New Zealand is known for it's multi-cultural friendliness. You'll get to know people pretty easily, most kiwi's (New Zealander's) are pretty easy going. Now when you come across Maori's (New Zealand's indigenous culture) most are pretty snobby but some are somewhat friendly, really depends on how you approach them I suppose.

You'll probably find yourself getting into pretty kiwi things such as binge drinking, rugby and some other stuff.
Also, in my city (Wellington) anyone you know, will know someone else you know. Most likely anway, so this should
help you get to know people.

If you need more information, send me a private message or reply here.
you can also contact, BeniS, Sharp (my brother)

Depends, New Zealand is possibly quite Racist towards Asians, especially in Auckland (the biggest city in New Zealand), whereas Wellington (The Capital) is a more care-free city.

If you are looking for a busy city life, then Auckland is a better choice than Wellington.

If a casual city life, with reasonable nightlife, then Wellington/Christchurch.

Although Christchurch is still rebuilding after the earthquake they had.

Wellington is a lot nicer than Auckland, but Wellington doesn't get many big headlining shows as Auckland and Christchurch does, the best ISP, I would say Telstraclear, or Orcon, depending on your situation, Telstraclear for speeds, but Orcon has a nicer plan, 99$ for unlimited data, including phone line. Depends on the plan you go with, but it isn't hard to find a good ISP in NZ since all of them are reasonably shit, but Orcon has recently started rolling out Fibre Optic so...

Thanks for all of the information, I've been researching about it for quite some time now, it seems like a really nice place to live. My. First choice for a city was Wellington, since most of the people of New Zealand tend to hate Aucklanders for some reason or another, I heard they called them "Nafas" or something like that.

As for a job, I'm looking to be in the IT business, so that would be great. My girlfriend is taking medical school at the moment, and her college will allow her to roll over her credits and hours when she moves.

But anyways, thanks for all the information, if there's anything else you would like for me to know, just say it, I wanna get all the info I can before moving countries aha.

I could also ask another question... How expensive is it to live there?

you're usd, so the exchange is= NZD1.24:1USD so initially the money you will have will be affected
This is a good idea of cost of living Cost of Living in Wellington, New Zealand. Prices in Wellington.

huehue we'll have to meet up! well maybe, the only OtLander I've met in real life before is BeniS.
P.S since you're looking to get into I.T, BeniS would be good to talk to about how the I.T industry is at the moment here

Nafas sounds like a racial term towards Samoans or Islanders to be precise since a lot of foreigners live in Auckland (Mostly Asians on the North Shore, and poorer poverty affected families like samoans/islanders in South Auckland/Manukau, which is like the ghetto of Auckland.

Pricing/Expenses really depend on where you live, Auckland currently has a falling house market I think, or it is just really expensive to live, and Wellington has one of the Cheapest living expenses in New Zealand.

is benis the guy that you scammed a burger from xD?

I never scammed nobody! He asked me to map a Killing in the name of boss room and I did, he rewarded me with McDonalds seeing as we lived pretty close.
By the time he got back to his house I had munched all of the McDonald's and even tried for seconds.

Don't forget you threw it all up.

Sorry for ninjaing the thread :D

But I've been interested in working in another country like New Zealand/USA/England for a while now.
Been thinking US because the company i work at now also exist in US (Big CORP shitty thing) but i am not a fan of US :P

Right now I'm working with IT Linux/Windows/VMS. (2 Years experience only tho :( )

How easy is it to find a serious job in the IT industry?
Do you have any good "job finding" website?

england is hard to find a job atm. New zealand is even harder. I'm english and went for a job interview for a 15 hour week shift. 30 people applied for the same job. All having like 5+ years experience on their belt. So it was good bye to me.

US has a lot of expanding industry at the moment and is probably better for someone looking for a job however it isn't as easy either. Most jobs people get are because they know someone who knows someone who is hiring.

IT is a huge industry within the us also.

good luck with finding a job in new zealand.. Australia is growing insanely fast and you should rather look there than new zealand

I was really looking to get off working nights. I work at a nightclub and the hours are killing me. I sent 200 cvs, emailed another 50 and only got 1 interview and that was for a 15 hour shift at asda. They only ha 1 job goung. 15 hours a week. I do that in 2 nights at the club lol. Nz from what i have heard is practically a dead market for jobs unless you are specialised. England isn't as bad but it is shit.

That's why I said I went for seconds.

You'll be fine as long as you don't confuse the kiwi for kiwi fruit.
Kiwi's is a nick for New Zealander's but it's also a national icon.
