Since some people here seem to have an issue regarding copyrighted material lets remove all aspects of copyrighted material this includes any links or technologies which resemble or belong explicitly to cipsoft and or 3rd party entities... It's either you're for or against copyright infringement but you can't have it both ways

But then what are you left with? A handful of tools, and @Peonso open tibia sprite pack. Since this an open source community shouldn't we solely be using open source property?

You clearly have no idea how copyright works; i suggess you to read that up before creating another thread in the feedback section.
I think i have more legal experience & knowledge than you do. Given my age & experience.. I actually do read about the law.

I am willing to listen to your point of view, however if all you are here to do is to start shit in here or every thread i make you can leave now & ignore any future threads until you learn to reply like a rational person. Thanks!

If you don't point exemples it is hard to know what is your point, "open source" is generic term and might relate to content that does not require any sort of copyright notice, or credit or sharing.

Also, OTServ development was funded on piracy and still very much related to it.

Now, if you are talking about members with double standard, that I also find funny. People that steal copyrighted property and cry when people use their content.

So explain to us.. me especially how copyright works?

Where did you learn that Otland is an open source community? I thought "OT" was short for "Open Tibia" and that includes both open source and other projects. Doesn't really make sense to talk about legal terms when it will never see legal action. It's like proclaiming that your use of copyrighted material is "fair use" before it's taken to court or posting your own terms and conditions on your Facebook wall.

What issue with copyrighted material are you talking about? Making something that resembles something else does not necessarily violate copyright laws. Also, what technology of CipSoft is any of us using? None I presume.

Open source material can be copyrighted as well. There's no comparison between open-source and copyrighted material because that's like comparing apples to oranges. What I believe you're trying to say is that we shouldn't share properietary software (a.k.a closed-source, commercial software) which we don't. This is not a piracy forum.

Open source means the source code is available. Open source projects can be copyrighted and should be credited if you're not a horrible person. This is what open source licenses are for, giving you the ability to use open code under terms.

OTServ wasn't funded from anything, nobody paid anyone to develop OTServ. Funding something usually requires that the investor is making profit out of it, otherwise it's a donation, so your point on that matter is invalid. Nobody used code from the original Tibia server to develop OTServ. You could say OTServ is majorly based on reverge engineering but that is actually fine and legal, not piracy.

You should probably read this thread.

The modus operandi of this community is actually pretty clear. It's a community where open-source is encouraged but not enforced and properietary software are not accepted (as in paying to get a tool for instance).
Therefore you can share your tools here, you are not required to provide the source code but you are obliged not to ask for any form of payment.

You're free to offer your services, as in being hired, for a payment but not actual content.

@Delirium so you are agreeing with me, open source content can have all sorts of licenses with all sort of restrictions. Also about funds, its clearly a typo, should read "founded".

And how you read the use of CipSoft content not exactly piracy, people are commercializing servers using it's modified software, art, game content and sprites, and tons of those stuff can be downloaded here. Also do not disregard leaked users' content.

I made your initial statement about open source software more clear actually, I mostly agree to that. I don't agree with "open-source does not require sharing" because by definition, open-source software is shared.

As for servers that make money using CipSoft's copyrighted material, yeah might actually be indeed illegal. However, Otland cannot be blamed or fall under legal actions because nothing of Cipsoft's is commercialized here.

I am not quite sure about how much using CipSoft's copyrighted material could be used to build a lawsuit against you still. Most servers make money in the form of donations which is again not the case, since you get something in return so someone could claim it's a purchase being made. Again, the product you sell is server-related. I mean, you don't sell CipSoft's product directly.
