When making a server, don't forget what got you into Tibia

Probably not gonna happen before I finish my semester abroad in Spain and come back to Germany in early September. Maybe then ping me again :) Will really be for only a few ppl if I make it "public-facing" though. Even a small VM can amount to some 30-40$/year. Also gonna add accounts for the players manually via xml/account manager (no AAC) or smth like that to reduce vulnerability to attacks to a minimum.
Like what are they going to do? Inject your xml "database"?

I'll make sure to ping you by then 😉

Times change and games that are fueled by greed eventually turn to shit. Tibia is one of many many game examples, as it's been a plague to the triple A studios these past years.

I also look at the few games that truly inspire me in the RPG industry: Elder Scrolls, Zelda, Phobos (that's what brought me here), and what it is about their worlds that truly reel me in a keep a grip on my interest, as so very few games do these days.
For me, it's having the right amount of immersion to make me feel like I'm being transported to a new world that's full of history and stories to uncover. The moment when you get surprised by a cool "Rare Drop" or sick new quest. Also the audio needs to be on point (irrelevant for Phobos obviously, but that's because it was a chill solo-grind-to-music kinda deal~

XML player and account files... memories Q.Q

My first OTS was probably Agoina by @Merrok . Great times back then... Oh, the memories.

@HalfAway YurOTS. Those were the days... Maybe I will set one up on local host raspberry pi, or a cheap cloud vm to play alone/with friends.
Invite me, I'm in.

It was the fun. Look at yurots engine and tell me how complex scripts you can write with it. Almost nothing - most of them are actions, most of methods didn't exist at all.

What did the server owners do to attract the players? They made the content. They made training monks, they made custom monsters, spells, items, vocations, places that could force you to fight your way out. They were adjusting the attackspeed, removing the exhausts, ammo/potion costs. They used pvp arena coded to load from xml. A npc that could walk was some next level coding. Most of things could be obtained from fighting your way to reach a chest or exploring some secret area in a custom map that included somewhat familiar city. A raid that could give some unique loot (or not unique) was also fun too. A guild could be created through speaking with a npc, no one needed a website.

What do we have now? Struggle to be the strongest guild on the server, often reinforced with the power of microtransactions, preys, charms, imbuing, market, addons, mounts, tons of events and systems that took weeks to code in order to give 5 minutes of entertainment. Same quests repeated every few months because every server is the exact copy of another.

You may play a retro server, but if it's ran in a modern server style, it won't feel the same either. The old version servers are still being hosted, but the spirit died because no one is trying to have fun anymore.

What got me into Tibia was Tibia itself. The fact that this game brought role-playing to another level. You not only played a role of some knight smashing trolls. Your deeds, diplomacy, politics, connections, alliances, conflicts... there was no other game where it all mattered that much, defined your role and could have impact on your gameplay even years later.

OT servers back in the days lacked that aspect completly, they were not serious, gave no thrill, no satisfaction, used to disappear next day, everything seemed easy and meaningless. None of those fun-things you mentioned ever were in my interest and I never saw any "spirit" in those bugged orshabambo evo servers honestly. Its content also seemed very underdeveloped comparing to real Tibia where every place, every monster, book and NPC had its depth and some story behind.

I think that what got me in tibia, really? It was the fun of playing with friends, nothing else. A server could suck, but if im playing with friends , it will be good anyway. i played tibia versions above 10.00 and altough, the game has changed a lot, if i play with friends it will be fine. The same applies for when i used to play old versions or yourots or those crappy 7.1 servers hahaha

1/1 aac, throwing joes.. fast atk, custom spells, super unbalanced. Was so much fun. OT now is only about copying official Tibia with the goal being $$. But yeah, back in the day you wouldnt get DDosed for no reason either so the requirements have changed, and so has the players. I still enjoy the oldschool rl servers tho. But yeah, yurots and evolution. Damn.

It is not that harder to understand. Its simple: time changes, tecnology changes and people change. When Tibia was launched, it was probably one of other two or three options. Back then, Tibia was a game... Now days, Tibia is a full time job for players and a business that needs to be profitable for Cipsoft. Besides all that, some things need to be clarified:
  • There is no "correctly way" to play a game;
  • There is a game for each type of person;
  • Tibia is not a D&D like game anymore;
  • The community launched several servers, so options are not a problem;
  • The mainstream of gameplay is different today: the majority of player want games with faster progress, that can be played casually or that can be turned into a full time job (by selling shit in RL or living by streaming);
  • Against that, looking at the market, Tibia has adapted to that kind of public;
  • And we, players with 28~30+ yo, want to play 2000s Tibia, so we are all here discussing that.
Least but not last, my opinion is just one more out there, agree or ignore.
