I see this way too often and it bothers the living fuck out of me.

The ENTIRE POINT of OTLand is so everyone can work together and try to make the best possible things. Because of this, basically every project is a combination of everyone's work in the OTLand community.

Even if I help someone make an entire script myself. The fact that I may have learned how to help that person from other people years ago means that THEY are helping that new person THROUGH me. And I'm using functions from TFS, or lib files that I didn't make most of the time. Basically EVERY THING YOU DO belongs to EVERYONE.

What does this mean?
If you see someone building upon a previous server, or script, or source edit, or map, or anything that you made in the past. LET THEM!

OTLand will get no where if everyone has to walk on eggshells trying to not "offend" all the other people that may or may not have helped produce different maps, scripts, source edits, mods, or even ideas.

Why can't we all just get along, be happy, and make good servers?

Giving credits to the author is atleast what you can do :P Then if they want to improve the script or edit, i have no problems with that ^^

Its not so difficult to put on the topic: "Credits to XXXXX" or "Idea from XXXX"
It don't hurts and at least show that you are not trying to promote yourself from somebody else works.

I think if people put the right credits more people would try to help instead, because you will see that someone else recognized your work.

True, if I went into a post, and saw "This is my script, it isn't finished yet, but i'm giving it out for free" then yes I would be able to put.
Credits to this guy ****.

But that is not always the case. Usually people have a server. (And most servers are a combination of a bunch of other people's work) and then they build upon that server and make it better. Then later on they might release their "finished products".

Now, do you really expect people to research something they fixed or did, to try to find out if anyone else's project that is similar looks like it MIGHT have been the base for the project they worked on, so they can give them credit? That would be completely absurd.

If you really want credit for something you make, you should notate the script and put "Please do not delete this" on it.
Code:
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
///Created by Flatlander////////////////////////////////
///Please do not delete this when making changes///
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

But if you just write
Code:
function Gigglefarts(cid, fartsound)
  if isCreature(cid) then doFartSound(getCreaturePosition(cid), fartTable[fartsound]) end
 return true
end

Then you see someone later on using your damn Gigglefarts function, you can't say "HEY! Give me credit for the thing you had NO POSSIBLE WAY of knowing that I created." that is simple stupidity.

I agree. I believe a prime example would be Jiddo's Advanced NPC system. That was created soooo long ago. However it is like the foundation for almost every advanced npc system out there. Still to this day if you download newest tfs 1.1 and open up the libraries for npcs you will see

-- Advanced NPC System by Jiddo

Jiddo was smart enough to know that he did ALOT of hard work, that was going to be used by many people long after.

However if you take a look at the potions script you don't see any credits. Who originally wrote this script? This is alot of work but there is no name. Now lets say I used this potions script here

http://otland.net/threads/potion-sc...-hp-mana-and-magic-level.203681/#post-2157302

And release a custom version of TFS 1.1 Called, "The Gigglefarts Server", and I had used his script for a basis of my script, and altered it to fit my many vocations, maybe changed the words, the effect, the potions around so one of them heals life and mana. Now this person didn't put his name in the script. I made some alterations, and then the next person who finds it, loves it, learns from it, enhances it to a whole new level. Bases the healing off of many other variables and releases it with credits to who? How are they supposed to know?

Now on the other hand, I do agree, GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.

If I take that script, and make some alterations to it because of some inspiration I got from seeing that kind of script. Make something more advanced and release on here without giving him credit, that is bogus as fuck. You already knew you intended to make something better from that script, and may or may not release it. Wouldn't take but a few seconds to find the script again if you couldn't remember who did it originally....

Now i want to make a gigglefarts server =/

Imo it's mostly about showing respect and appreciation for people's effort.
A person acting like he made something that is made by someone else is like acting that person never did it, the effort was not worth mentioning, that it's simply not really appreciated or that the poster just wants to benefit from taking credits from other people's work.

I once made a script someone requested in pm, took me about 2 hours and then he didn't respond, no thanks or anything.
Later he released it and said he made it. It was so disrespectful and ungrateful that I kind of laughed about it, but imagine if alot of people would do that.

As mentioned in a post above, showing appreciation for people's effort by adding credits will only motivate more people to contribute.
What I usually do if I don't know the maker, credits: unknown or credits to the maker of that TFS script.
If the makers are unknown, you can still show you appreciate their effort by mentioning you didn't create the script or only edited it and that you are not trying to benefit from taking credits from other people's work.

There is no copyright on tfs ideas. If cip did something, there will be someone who will write that in lua/c++ for tfs sooner or later.

Once something is posted on otland, all author can do is reporting that with deletion request. Once something is posted on the internet, it's very hard or sometimes impossible to remove it completely and every scripter should deal with it without crying that idea was taken from another server.

I spend countless hours making scripts for other people.
I don't even look at scripts people are posting, and if I found out that someone was asking for scripts, then re-publishing them as "their own" I don't know if I would care at all. I've even had many people take my name, "Flatlander" and my servers "Species" and pretend to BE ME and make servers "AS ME" and do I care? No not at all. Why would I? What kind of egotistical freak would I be if I became angered at other people for pretending to be me, or pretending my work was theirs.

Now if I was selling my work, or if it was copywrited, that would be different, but this is a SHARING COMMUNITY. I EXPECT everything I give to the public to be taken and used. Actually I HOPE as many people use the ideas and work that I give out as possible, I don't care if they know I made it.

Maybe I am weird and different. But it is almost like, now that you can't make money selling scripts in the marketplace, people are trying to make Reputation through their scripts. No one cares about you, who you are, what you do, or how famous you want to be. The point of OTLand is to make things OTHER people can enjoy. And knowing "Flatlander made this" won't make any server more fun.

Well you can still share and show appreciation for someone's effort at the same time. Knowing people appreciate the effort is for most people more motivating than people who don't seem to care.
Sometimes people give me credits for helping with a script they release, for me this is not needed but I do appreciate it.
It's like they appreciated my support so much that they thought it was worth mentioning in their release and people who appreciate my effort only motivates me to do more because I know it's appreciated.

Giving Credit isn't BAD. I just simply think it is completely stupid to condemn people for not giving credit.

In my opinion it's just disrespectful and a lack of appreciation. After all, adding credits only takes a few seconds to show you appreciate the effort of the maker who might spent alot of time on it.
So what could be a reason for not adding credits? :p
I can understand if people don't like it seeing their work not being appreciated or if someone tries to benefit from it by taking the credits instead of acknowledging someone's effort.

Well, giving a credit is something like saying "thank you" to the author. It's only a sign of respect and shouldn't be something to argue about.

Posting someone's work and stating that you wrote it all yourself is like saying "f**k you" to the author and should be considered as forum rules violation in my opinion.
