Alright, here's the deal.
I'm reformatting my computer, switching from windows xp to windows 7, and I've been using avast for quite a while now (the free one, home edition), and I don't really know which is the best antivirus, furthermore, avast sometimes can be a bitch and I wouldn't be surprised if it slows down my computer.
So I'm asking for your opinion.

I personally like AVG, Kaspersky and Avast.

Those are the ones that I'd recommend.

As mentioned in previous replies - Avast. I have used it for what seems like forever now and I've never had a single virus. I certainly do recommend it!

I recommend Avast! I have used this anti-virus for serval years yet no problems with getting virus and the software dedecting virus at websites too that is awesome xD

HAAHHAHAHh uber mega LOL&OWNED
I recomend NOD, Kaspersky, AVG, Microsoft essentials BUT LOLL DONT USE AVAST PLEASE

NOD, Kaspersky = Cost money lol not worth it!
Microsoft essentials = Sucks!
AVG = Take much memory! Make sometimes my comp lagg!
Avat = Awesome & Free! & Doesnt take much memory!

This thread pops up once a week or so. There is no 'best' anti-virus, since they are all changing constantly. None of them will pick up 'everything' since new threats come out into the wild all the time and no company is able to keep up with them.

My personal preference is Trend Micro (PC-Cilllin), as far as free anti-virus protection goes, Avast! is my pick.

Please Don't Use Norton :
I dislike Norton because it comes with 2-tonnes of junk that you'll never need - hence why it costs a billion dollars a year. If you use Norton you can safely disable 90% of it or your computer will be slewed to a grinding halt very quickly.

with regards

mmmm!
the best antivirus in the world is the the user

avoid downloading files in places that are known to serve infected files, some freeware sites are questionable, avoid p2p sites, porn etc........

never run your system in administrative mode, a few seconds on the net it will become an open target, protect your admin account with a password, open and create a limited user account, do not open unkown emails containing files,

if a limited user account becomes infected it can be deleted if removel is impossible, clearing the cache's is an option, in the limited user account it makes anything impossible to install without admin access so the worst it can get is spyware.

surf safe, be safe in a limited user account, after all, your asking for it running as admin online/offline!

edit: to add, the registry cannot be changed without a password, system files cannot be overwritten, programs cant be installed, nothing can be changed unless you allow it to be, software that is installed like nero and other can be used, games even gadgets.

never give anyone full access to your computer, yep not even family or friends, you are the one that makes changes as needed, open seperate user accounts for others, thus avoiding any changes that cannot be fixed, remember a user account can be delete in administrative mode.

this makes it impossible to get trojans/scumware/mailware to gain control of your system.

I was into the world of trojans some time ago and antivir is the most effective...is very difficult hide of him

Beast control program. Beast is a Windows-based backdoor Trojan horse sitting invisibly in infected computer and this program gives full control of that computer.

A Trojan horse, or Trojan, is a standalone malicious file or program that does not attempt to inject itself into other files unlike a computer virus and often masquerades as a legitimate file or program. Trojan horses can make copies of themselves, steal information, or harm their host computer systems.[1] The first and many current Trojan horses attempt to appear as helpful programs. Others rely on drive-by downloads in order to reach target computers.

@Ello (top post) : For the edit that is not always true, it depends on the privledges that the current account has, sometimes it's neccisary to run something via admin acc through the current acc to completly do something. As for protections you are right about not running your personalized account as the admin but as a normal user (this includes removing the power users group from your account), as for not letting anyone use your computer. Set-up a guest account that has no rights other than to connect to the internet or run basic programs (ie: word, pwr point, etc.)

@Tibiamakers: Trojans are pretty much like the base of a virus, they are all pretty hard to hide since they run as 'helpful' programs that only change the registry codes and whatnot.

@Ello (Bot post) : You forgot to mention some of them will hide themselves anywhere and anyhow including creating copies of it'self once one is deleted.

there are systems to ofuscate the source of the trojan and antivirs can't detect it, and believe me , most of antivirus that people is saying, with a bit of knowledge can't detect a good trojan, I just say that anti vir is the most difficult to pass

go to commonsense.com and download "CommonSense-1.0-HOTFIX", install it, and always keep the definitions updated(read about viruses).
You should be fine with that.

Mcafee Antivirus Plus it protect your whole computer you can use it 6 month trial after the trial is end remove/uninstall it and install it 6 month trial again with new email! Good idea??
