Ddos Attack, Need protection!

Hello everyone, I made this post because I just bought a VPS without any kind of protection and I am being pinged or attacked... I setup my firewall, installed anti ddos guardian, d-guard firewall, peerguardian 2, but the lag is still a problem in my ot... some noobs enter to the ot and they say : give me points or I ddos ur server... What can I do to setup a max size of packets to receive? What programe is more efective that the one I have? What can I do to quit the lag??
Some guys told me, make Iptables, put echorequests... but I dont know what are those things, so that's why I am making this post, I need very fast help

Without internet exchange point support you can do only shit,
change/get better server dedicated provider with good nternet filter service.

There's no other way.

Router is created for this work,
PC processor is hundred times slower than Router processor if we talk about packet filtering.
