I'd like to ask a question for people that play these: what's the appeal?
The mapping's shit, the quests are shit, there's pretty much nothing original in any of them (woooooo items with 854739256897245 atk and monsters with 587423985761847561 hp yeah how fun and creative), the community is usually pretty awful, etc.
Why do people play them?

I like them because they usually contain the most new stuff, if I go to a real map it will be most of the same exact same scripts and map and when I go to a rpg server they are usually just focused on the map with barely any new items/spells/features etc and that doesn't interest me. And most evos aren't like you described, maybe that's the norm because it appeals to new hosters but there's also many great evos out there with lots of unique and custom stuff - vestia.pl is an example. It's the most popular OT out right now.

From my experience, it seems like they're not really focused on the map, because I have never seen an evo map that actually makes any sense (woo yeah let's put mine cart tracks all over the city but not do anything with them. yeah, I think I'll put some geysers in the stone floor of the temple too, because nature wooooo)

I never said they were focused on the map, and how the map looks and is designed is mostly irrelevant to most players.

- Familiar map and locations
- Not a real map
- Very adaptable / able to be changed
- Easy starting point for new servers

To just name a few. It's generally a good idea to not use to use all-inclusive words when talking about this anything.

As someone that owns a server whose shape is similar to an Evo map:

The mapping's shit,

@Luffy would take offense to that.

I take offense to that.

I think balance has an important place in this. But afaik most Evo maps mirror real Tibia stats/monsters, no?
As for someone that has spent the last 5 years developing a server (it will be 6 years come next week); I take offense to people assuming that just because you can do 4,000 damage PVP means the server is crap / not developed / not balanced.

the community is usually pretty awful, etc.

There's bad apples in any community. But from my experience the community (or communities, it's been so long) have been some of the most genuine I've ever seen in my life.

I'm not actually offended. I'm only being a bit hyperbolic at the all-inclusive statements you made.

In regards to what I assume you were getting at:
I'm also disappointed to see servers being hosted with minimal work being done not being consistently improved upon after launch because their "online count" isn't the greatest. The fact that the majority of the Open Tibia players (which, mind you, typically are not even a part of OTLand) would prefer a "pizza server" - (@Dalkon 2013) over someone busting their ass to make something unique and enjoyable.

Please keep in mind, every server starts somewhere. There's always room for improvement, and I'd much rather a server "be an Evo" and see it actively developed than hosted sloppily and abandoned.

well I guess you and I are thinking about 2 totally different kinds of evos. I'm talking about the ones that are made by people like the Rohan OTS team.

There is no imagination with today's servers, every server is a copy of a copy with a different name.. sure there are great scripters but there aren't any great servers.

The only non-terrible evo I've played so far was abaddonots. It wasn't that bad, but I wasn't too interested in it.

I hate The Download And Run Servers So I mapped My Own

I believe RED explained perfectly why there are so many EVO servers. Look at it this way.... How many noobs you think visit otland? How many noob members we have, then think about all the noobs who don't even make accounts.... Which one looks like easiest to start and run, and then modify and configure? Red made some valid points there, EVO is top at that. Now why would there be so many evo servers? We just answered that, so why are so many of them being played? Who knows? Go play it, if you don't like it, then that's how YOU feel. Didn't it occur to you there are 7 Billion people in the world, are we not allowed to like different things? Ok then, I believe your questions have been answered. Maybe you should try to not be so offensive to people with your statement of opinions when posting on here. Everyone needs to have more respect for each other. Remember that someone somewhere spent some significant amount of time developing w/e it is on here for everyone. That's why they release, the people who just copy one persons script make one change and repost, they get called out, and flamed, take your anger out on them for trying to steal credits. But when you have a release of anything that is more than just a few lines of code, remember no one is releasing these free releases and getting paid for it...

How about asking...

What is something from an EVO "type" server that you guys have enjoyed, found nice, or otherwise liked or interested you?

Pretty sure DeathZot was Evo too and it is the only 8.6 server that I approve of.
But if you haven't played it, I recommend it. I'm not sure what the community is like now, but it was the best when it opened.

Idk what kind of old school son of a bitch you are but most of the evos out there are pretty good. Every ot is different than the others.

To mention a few.
Evolera.se the ot itself is based on ueing and levels. ( 8.6+ doesn't allow bot)
Exoria.net is pvp based ot which is based on skills. (8.6 + allows bot)

I would suggest them both if you like pvp.

Most of the ots nowadays are made for pvp. Not RPG or chilling.

You are being so god damn hypocritical it's disgusting. Keep your short story to yourself.

There is no imagination with today's servers, every server is a copy of a copy with a different name.. sure there are great scripters but there aren't any great servers.

This is because, making a great custom server takes months, if not years. then when we release our custom server, after 2 weeks no one plays it.

The only server of mine that was actually a success was the original Species, and that was because there were 80,000 people botting RL Tibia and probably 10,000 dedicated OT Players, and War servers were really popular at the time, so I made the best war server. and managed to get 0.3% of people to play my server by making the best war server at it's time. (Thats 250-300 players online on average)

Now there are 20,000 people playing RL tibia, and 20,000 on otservlist, so less players. But it is easier than ever to make OTServers now, so there are more servers and less players. But! Players no longer want war servers, players are looking for custom OTs, that take months and months of work.
Then if you do make the best Custom OT and get 0.3% of players to log in, you get 120 players online on average, yay.
