My Server Idea

I want to create a unique server, my dream server. It will be a hardcore classic server, but with changes. It will be a mix of my favorite games: Tibia and Metin2.

1. The Map

  • I will use a edited real Tibia map.
  • I will add one big castle in the middle, called Camelot.
  • At the start, Camelot will be the main (and maybe only) city.
  • It will be a home and meeting place for all players. Many quests (inspired by King Arthur, Tolkien, and other classic stories) will start here.
  • Other cities on the map could be enemy kingdoms.
2. Main Changes

a) Equipment Upgrading (like Metin2)

  • You can upgrade items to +9. Higher levels make your character glow a little.
  • Upgrading is a gamble; it can succeed or fail.
  • It costs gold and maybe other items.
  • To keep it balanced, hardcore ad not too OP a +0 item will have for example 50% of base power, and a +9 item will have 110% or so.
b) Spell Upgrading

  • Spells can also be upgraded, from (for example) 50% to 110% power.
  • You upgrade them using skill books that drop from...
c) Metin Stones

  • You find these stones on the ground or in dungeons while exploring.
  • When you hit one, monsters appear.
  • You get loot and exp from the monsters and from the stone itself.
  • Their location should be random - to make them a nice surprise while normal exp, but also possible to play as "metin hunter"
d) Fishing

  • You cast your fishing rod and wait 20 seconds (you don't have to watch the screen, so you can do some pushups or smth).
  • A sound plays, and then an anti-bot mini-game starts (like pressing spacebar or using the mouse).
  • You can catch junk, valuable upgrade items, fish, or hair dye.
  • Fishing should be profitable and fun - so you can fish at work, or while you are broke to catch up
e) Character Look

  • Your character's outfit should show the equipment you are wearing - if its to hard to do, then... skip it :P
  • If that's not possible, everyone will look similar, but you can change your hair color (or maybe haircut as well) with dye or your hairstyle at a barber ONLY
  • The style will be classic Tibia. No flashy wings or auras. Only simple changes.
3. General ideas

  • Grinding will be hard. The experience rate will be low (like 0.5x).
  • There will be daily activities, like a "Demon Tower" (from Metin2) where you can upgrade gear for free / almost free
  • PvP will be less hardcore. I'm thinking about using client 8.0 or 7.4 with hotkeys.
  • The main focus is on RPG quests and grinding. PvP is important, but it's an extra feature.

I need your help! I want to work on this project, but I am alone. I only know how to build maps in RME.

My questions for you:

  1. Is OTClient the best and most legal option? If I use 100% custom sprites (not from CipSoft), could I even put it on Steam? What do you think?
  2. Where can I find a real map base, as well as custom sprites base, to start editing in RME and build my Camelot? ( [7.4] Authentic Real Map - Extracted from TibiCAM files (https://otland.net/threads/7-4-authentic-real-map-extracted-from-tibicam-files.270466/page-7) - is this base okay? ) For now, I would like to run a real map with RME, change its sprites to custom and start mapping/editing on my own

You are welcomed to help / discuss

regards

Look at Zezenia: it's on Steam as an indie MMORPG with 2D graphics and similar mechanics (quests, random loot, enchantments). This proves that a custom project with a modified client can make it to Steam.

Therefore, your idea of using 100% custom sprites and a client like OTClient does have viable precedents.

But beware, the fact that Zezenia is on Steam doesn't guarantee that its technology (server/client) is free of legal risks. Zezenia most likely uses resources with its own or controlled licenses.

For you, that means:

- You must replace absolutely everything from CipSoft/official Tibia that may be copyrighted (sprites, names, lore).

- Using OTClient or a modified client is technically valid, as long as the client (and the assets) are yours or licensed.

- Forking a base is fine for local development, but for Steam, you need all content visible to the player to be original or copyrighted.

Zezenia is an example that you can publish a "modded server + client" game on Steam, but only if you take copyright precautions and ensure complete originality in graphics, names, and assets.
