Rank positions 1,2,3,4,5

I need to make in highscores numbers of position:

1. Otland 50lvl
2. Otfans 40 lvl
3. ORG 30 lvl

i need this (1., 2., 3.)
i used

'.$i.'

but its showing (1,1,1,1,1,1)

any help?

its reading from one line

$list = mysql_query('SELECT `id`, `name`, `level` FROM `players` ORDER BY `level` DESC LIMIT 5'');

$i++;

then i use

<td><b></b>'.$i.'</td>

and its 1,1,1,1

SELECT players, MAX(level) FROM players GROUP BY name ORDER BY MAX(level) DESC LIMIT 10

DESC LIMIT 10 <--- its choosing 10 players not making 1,2,3,4,5 code $i++ have somethign with 1,2,3

i use this at end of reading file from DB:

DESC LIMIT '.$cfg['ranks_per_page']*$i.'');

and this:

$i = +1;
$i++;

I got now 2
if i change $i = +1; to $i = +2;
i got 3

any idea?
i use '.$i.' to write this numbers
