I am an old dawg coming back after years. I really wanted to run a 13.x or above but so far things have changed so much I am lost as to which way to go. Advice? From what I hear the newer versions 13 & 14 are WAY different as opposed to previous? I used to run 8.7

For 10.98+ (if you want the latest real), Canary is your fastest route. This is not the right forum though.
For 10.98 or less, TFS and this forum is what you want.

I may have to go with 10.98 :S I really like the newest Client with all the hotkey space it has so was hoping to to do that. I just enjoy mapping and seeing things come to life

I get you — it’s still a lot of fun!
I tried running a 13.20 Canary server about a year ago. It had a smart base and relied mostly on revscripts, so there was no need to define everything in XML like with most TFS builds. That said, it seems to be mainly supported by the Brazilian community.

Because of that, I decided to switch to a 1098 Hellgrave-based project (cool features but not clean and NOT stable.. so there is work to do) and started implementing Canary features into it. The goal is to make it compatible with both systems — basically a hybrid solution that works across versions.

otherwise if u want a clean base I think this is a great project to start with👍:

BlackTek doesn't use newest client, it uses the latest client to use .spr and .dat still (which most the tools use/support in the community), which is 10.98, and so it's highly suggested to use it if that's a client version you are ok with, if not, and you absolutely must have the newer client, Canary is really the only option aside from Crystal Server which is based on Canary, but Canary probably has more support as it's got a bigger community (compared to crystal server).

BlackTek is for sure the best option in my (biased) opinion, especially if your client target version is 10.98... if you want, you can check out how much has been going on with it over time, here BlackTek-Server Development Thread (https://otland.net/threads/blacktek-server-development-thread.289242/)
