Book of Origins
A time of conflict, and the birth of diplomacy.
Recorded Date: TK, year 147, month 7, day 12.
This book of origins is being written so that future generations will understand their history and understand how our current system has come to be. Whether our system is good or bad is dependent on the people of our realm to decide. I have come to understand our decisions through a century of learning, and I have yet to discover a proper course of action to dictate our future. Without a concise course of action our great great grand childrens children will grow in strife and conflict. I can assure you of that.
Where should we start? Hum hum.
Ah. For a thorough understanding we should start at AT, as EoT is too far gone, and much too long to describe in detail. I will start with The Breaking and follow through to present day, skipping a few decades at times.
At the start of AT:TB the EoT had just finished off the Triangle of Terror (will reference this as ToT from here on) and their minions. Many of the warriors of that time had died during the conflict, including some very famous heroes and leaders at the time. There was not much left in the land, and few citizens could call any place home. Most of the main continent was broken and shattered with very few areas of Tibia left standing, and everywhere else overtaken by nature, or simply overrun by the ocean after The Quake of EoT -638, which had been a fatal blow to the armies of the ToT.
Humans in general were scattered everywhere, and no cohesive government was left to govern the people remaining. As such, many wandering groups were formed and fought for what little land remained against any and all forces, evil or good (AT -537 to -524) . During this time of strife, many people died of hunger and sickness, as the gods were mostly lost to the people and almost all of the magic had been snuffed from the world. Eventually the groups of wanderers stopped their conflict with each other. They joined forces and made small villages that were a safe haven to many of the other wandering humans (AT -524 to -509). The dwarves did not help us at all during this time, and that's to be expected. Our treaty with them ended the moment our trade stopped with the collapse of the old capital, Thais (EoT -637). They shut off all access to their mountain fortress, and forced us to fend for ourselves. The elves also did not communicate with us at this time, as I'm sure they hoped we would kill ourselves off or the remaining evil forces would do us in. Lucky for them, neither event occurred. I'll get to that later.
In this time where small villages were turning into cities, and later capitals (AT -509 to -467), most of the evil forces had flourished as well, seeing as there was land to accommodate them. Any humans that had not been lucky enough to find the villages were turned into slaves by the evil forces. (Quick note: Evil forces of this time are the same that we know today. Orcs, Minotaurs, and Serpents.) Not much is known of what the slaves were forced to do. We do know that the women were separated from the men. We can speculate, that women were used to grow their forces faster then normally possible, and the men were forced into labour, either into mines for materials, or to build cities and monuments to their 'glory'. We can still see signs of finished fortresses and broken monuments today, so it is a fair assumption. With the large increase in both evil and human populations, many skirmishes broke out to gain more land. Many cities were destroyed on both sides, and even more were simply captured and retaken numerous times in an endless battle for dominance (AT -474 to -326). It was around, AT, year -326, that the gods took interest in us again, and a slow uphill battle began to push the evil forces back, and start gaining control of the world again using magic the insight from the gods bereft of us. During the following years (AT -326 to -298) humans gained roughly 23 percent of the evil forces land and we set to control our region thoroughly, letting our overall ground advantage grow our forces to a size that they could not possibly match with the land they possessed. This turned out to be a huge mistake on our part. The Eruption of AT -298 decimated what little land there was remaining from The Quake of EoT -638. Roughly 70 percent of our remaining land mass was destroyed from the massive volcano eruption. The lava that spewed forth during those 4 months created a gigantic island of molten rock, that could not possibly be used to support life. During these 4 months the evil forces attempted to decimate what was left of our race, and effectively reversed the field of power overnight as our armies were crushed again and again. We were completely cornered, lava at our backs, and evil at our front door, we were on the brink of extinction, or enslavement. The elves were equally as distraught as we were, as their forest was being overtaken by the molten lava, and ruining their entire homeland, which was about 70% of the remaining land not touched by the lava. They were also suffocating from the ash generated by the volcano, which we humans were mostly immune to thanks to our druids. They contacted us at this point to allow us into their forest home, on the sole purpose of healing their sick. Without us to heal them from the suffocating ash, they would have inevitably perished. The main part of our remaining forces made a hole in the evil army ranks long enough to get most of the women and children through with some men to guard them from natural threats. This group was able to reach the elves mostly unscathed. The evil forces easily destroyed our fractured army, and laid waste to the rest of the human population.
At this point in human history (AT -298), of the sole remaining survivors, not including any slaves left in the evil forces, 328 women and 44 men remained. Of those remaining alive approximately 80 percent were children. The few remaining adults created the first government seen since the collapse of Thais (EoT -637). The remaining humans (almost entirely consisting of druids, but with a few exceptionally talented knights, sorcerer's and paladins) pleaded with the elven nation for sanctuary. The elves were not persuaded by our pleas, but they knew that their formidable army was being decimated by the evil forces remaining outside the forest, as this was the only land other then the hidden cities of the dwarves that they had not consumed. The elves agreed to the sanctuary request of the humans and announced they will be activating The Enchantment. The Enchantment can only ever be activated once, and predates the EoT period by several thousands of years, very easily reaching into BF period. The Enchantment is a collective amount of magic absorbed over many years by those willing to give their power to The Enchantment. Once The Enchantment is activated it creates a bubble of protection. No physical object nor magic can pass through or harm this barrier, in fact anything that touches the barrier is instantly destroyed. The Enchantment itself is also protected from harm during the length of it's duration. It is written that the activation of The Enchantment, and the following magical events could only be described as 'The God's Sheltering Hand'. It was beautiful, wonderful, and deadly. Inside the bubble, the air was purified. The air was so perfect and pure that humans went under an evolutionary change. Their life spans were increased dramatically and their bodies flourished. Stronger, quicker and more intelligent, the children born during this period easily outlived their predecessors because of the extended lifespan and bodily changes caused by the purified air. They were able to grow and populate unhindered for many years and our population quickly increased with almost no death at all.
During this period the newly founded government decided it was in the best interests of everyone to create three separate governments to govern the people and also to found The Guilds. By having three separate governments, responsibility for different sectors can be assigned, and the groups can watch over each other, so corruption is less likely to occur. The Guilds were founded to create a working relationship for the different sectors of government. The three main guilds formed were called the 'Guild of Magic and Intrigue', the 'Guild of Labour and Agriculture', and the 'Guild of Knights and Weaponry'. (..... unfinished)
