It hasn't been much, in the last year. (We've lost about 50,000 players in the last 5 years total though)
Basically, as the popularity of steam, and free games (such as League of Legends) rose, the players of tibia have decreased.
I'm not sure HOW you found tibia, but I found it by going through "online games" at downloads.com back in the year 2000.
I have never seen an advertisement for Tibia, I have never seen Tibia on any website other than Tibia.com and their fansites.
I think tibia gained some players, then those FEW people who ACCIDENTALLY found tibia told other people, and it spread that way.
Do you know how people look for new games now?
Steam, freepcgamers.com, IGN, Gamestop, GameFly, Amazon, TV, twitch.tv.
Tibia was greenlighted on steam.

But even then, it has been a year and you cannot download Tibia on Steam or find it by searching.
Even if Tibia gets players, those players won't necessarily find the OT Community.
And playing an OT is actually fairly difficult compared to normal games.
(We don't have a Lobby with all the servers in the game client, you have to go to OtServList.org or OtList.net to look for servers. And most servers don't have good tutorials or explanations of how to play the game, so new players would be completely lost from the start.
Want a ton of new players? Because I can tell you how we can get thousands of new players on OTs.
- We need our own sprite-pack, and to not use ANY Cipsoft Sprites.
- We need a server list (like otservlist) included IN the client. So you can simply select a server from the list, and join.
- We need a global-friends list. So you can see what server your friends are playing, and "Invite" or "Join" your friends.
- We need an offline-tutorial for new players. To show basic game-mechanics before they join any server.
If we had the above things in a client. We could easily distribute it and gain more players. But instead, we have basically made it impossible for new players to join without being introduced by a Veteran OT Player.
