How difficult is is it to make an OT server with no experience?

Hello! Like the title says I have no experience with OTs and found this site thanks to someone mentioning it on an OT I was playing recently. I'm interested in making my own custom server with a custom map as a hobby project in my down time and am wondering how difficult it is to start a project?
I'm not even 100% sure I'd open it to the public, but would like to work on something like I do in RPG maker and just create a custom world.
I'm in my mid-thirties and have played Tibia since 1998 when I was a child and the nostalgia of an older version appeals to me, but I'd like one with the possibility to create my own quests, items, and NPCs without being as old as 7.6 (willing to try 7.6 if it has potential).

I would really appreciate any advice/links to clients on otland to start with that don't take a lot of prep to jump into, and if they do take prep I'd appreciate if the client has decent documentation for a complete noob to get up and running. Thanks for reading.

You can get a server up and running in no time. There are plenty of tutorials available, including one on the OTLand docs:
I would suggest using TFS 1.6 as your server because you said you wanted it to be a custom map etc:
You can also visit the tutorial section on OTLand:

In regards to actually editing the server, it all depends on one of two things: if you have any coding experience; or if you want to pay a developer(s) to make changes for you. If you have one or the other, it shouldn't take much time to get the ball rolling, if you have neither, it's going to be a long process to get the type of server you want.

However, as a fun thing to do, for person experience or a close group of friends, then time shouldn't be an issue.

It would be wise to definitely look into the Lua language and learn the basics, I would also learn how XML is structured and manipulated.

Then you have several tools you will need, ranging from RME(map editor), to Item Editor/Object Builder for sprite/item data.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I'll look into that link you sent me and try to start there. As far as the other stuff goes I don't have any experience with LUA or XML but will look into them both, since I want too learn this stuff on my own as a hobby. I googled RME and am now very excited that I can build my own map, thanks for pointing this out to me!
