How they make their money is their business, but paying for premium, boosts or any other ingame power up is essentially legalized cheating. Players should be on a level playing field. I'd rather have the game be completely free and rely on making money from advertisements or cosmetics, or just make it a monthly subscription game. Personally I'd prefer a free game, with an option of paying for cosmetics, but even a pay to play model is better than pay to win.

If u can get something just by money IRL = p2w
If u can get something after days or weeks farming =/= p2w

Just keep that in mind.

And xp boost is just p2w in games with unlimited lvls, like Tibia.

For me also, in tibia back in the days it was fun to kill people knowing they need to lose another 2 hours just to get back where they were before ;p

I Would like to ask u people to let me know a lil about details how the server should be set up, the PvP type u prefer and stuff like that as I plan to open the server in December! ;)

The thing is that servers need to profit, pay the dedicated host; must be a really good one because if there's a single DDoS attack, the players are going to kill your private messages that they are going to quit the server.
So basically, there must be a way for the server to pay the dedicated host and to also profit a bit for the owner.

Oh I don't care at all if people spam me saying they are going to quit.

If you are making an OT Server (especially a good one) you are doing a job. People should be paid for doing a good job. If you do not think people should be paid for doing a good job then you are for slavery. I personally am against slavery. Therefor I do not get angry at developers who want to get paid for their work.

You should make the game YOU want to play.

Make a server that you personally would play, if you play it and enjoy it, most likely other people will play and enjoy it.
Asking people what they want is almost never a good idea.

What is the difference between a monthly subscription and premium? if you agree that a monthly subscription is okay premium is a lite version of it where the player can test the game before purchasing anything in my opinion that is better than a monthly subsciption.

P2W is in my opinion a toxic development in the game industry today concerning how my personal preferences to what i want to achive while playing a game. Yet it's obvious that p2w is what fits most players today and where the big companies makes the most money and therefore a logical development.
P2W is also the reason i do not play any games nowdays except occasionally a cheap well done indie game or a proper old buy once game like Heroes 3 etc. You just have to accept that the game industry along with it's players has changed.

Monthly subscription is pay to play.
Premium (in tibia) is pay to play the full game, including spells. (The spells and promotion is where the pay to win part come in.)

Well there are different degrees of pay to win in my opinion, oldschool tibia with only premium as an option is not pay to win, per definition it might be described as pay to win but for me pay to win is not paying for content like a premium status if you then need premium to play properly then it's pay to play and not pay to win, the main differnce is once you had that premium status you couldn't inject more money to get more and more advantages over and over thus pay to win you just keep paying to win or get ahead.

I.e. if you pay for 1 month premium status and then buy another you get 2 months premium status not double premium status, if you pay for gold or exp, overpowered eq you can do it over and over and get ahead. Now obviously it's more complex than that and there is a fine line of what is acceptable and everyone has a different opinion about that and with my previous argument you could apply that with an 1 hour of exp boost etc. which i think is pay to win, basically it's not about what you call it but the impact of how much you have to keep spend in order to keep up with top money spenders and that is a big difference from the premium system to lets say clash of clans or some other mobile paywall game.

I don't even think xp boost is a pay to win, you still have to hunt if you want it to be worth.

If you have xp boost and allow 100% afk botters all day long and don't reward active players sharing party exp, then I see how that could be a problem, other than that, just don't create edited items, infinit soft boots and stuf like that.

Hey, why do u discuss such things if I said that I'm willing to pay for the hosting, I believe that people playing could help me by I don't expect that, I also plan to fix a lil rlots project with all their official files just to begin with, and in time when I feel like it add something to the game like missing quests or events and shit, I have job already and I don't seek profit, I seek for fun and time-killing, so there is no such thing like "is p2w good to creators to make profit" becouse this server is gonna be about good leaders and fighters to keep the server fun, the teams to fight won't have to pay money for in game money to buy supplies but kill bosses and shit, just really use the server all together, in my opinion that what mmorpg like tibia should be like and that is what this server will be like

The difference between a monthly subscription game and Cipsoft's "premium" system is that monthly subscription is pay to play, "premium" is pay to win.

If 2 players of the same skill and knowledge have a race to level 200, one has premium, the other doesn't, which one wins?
If 2 level 200 sorcerers fight eachother, one has premium, the other doesn't, which one wins? (let's not forget that if the premium player wants, he doesn't even have to fight, he can just hide out in a premmy city and avoid the fight entirely, winning by default).

In a multiplayer game where players compete like Tibia, "premium" gives a massive advantage, unnecessarily creating a paywall to essential features. It would be better if everything is paid for, not just those features. Otherwise, it should just be honestly advertised as "free to play the handicapped version".

Pay to win sux, the best way to go about it is a small monthly fee - outfits - other things that don't affect gameplay.

I feel like this has been lost on most developers today.
It's always "What would you like to see in our game".

When's your server ready :p

You completely misunderstood my point, I know very well the technical difference of a monthly subscription and a premium system, what I'm saying is that in the essence of it it's the same thing, with your way of looking at it, if a subscription for a game cost 20£ If 2 players of the same skill and knowledge have a race to level 200, one has subscription, the other doesn't, which one wins? lets say the premium cost 20£ per month and that it is the only thing you can buy for real money in the game, how is that any different from a subscription? as i see it then is pay to play the real game or try the "lite" version of the game before you decide to pay for it.

The main difference for pay to win as you call a premium status game is different from the definition of p2w in my view, e.g. if you buy one month premium and then another month premium you get 2 months of premium or "subscription" if you buy more and more it adds to longer a longer duriation of premium but no other game advantages, a player with 12 month of premium has the same advantage as a player with 1 month premium for me that is a subsciption and a pay to play.
However if you can buy gold and exp boosts or other special items, benefits or any other direct advantages that gives you more and more advantage the more you pay, then that is the essence of pay to win e.g. if you buy 10k gold and then you buy 10k gold you get 20k gold instantly thus you can keep injecting money for further direct advantages, compare that to a premium status where you can't get further advantages the more you pay and you should see a quite distinctive difference.

To clarify above in small text.
Premium is to buy the game - the play for free part of the game is "test the game Before you buy it."
Pay to win is different. If I pay real Money for items that makes my tibia Life easier, im paying to win.

If im paying to play the actual game and not 10% of the game that the free version offer im not paying to win.
