The arrow slot is a "ranged" slot thus only works when you are at a range from your target. If you would like to use the staff regardless of distance you should put it in your hand. This is the disadvantage for using 2 books and is intended.
Clubs do not add stats when in arrow slot because they are not ranged weapons. They are only wield-able in the arrow slot while using Iron Grip however the disadvantage to this spell is that you will need to sacrifice some stats to use it. Again this is intended, I was going to change it last update but then I did more testing with 2 handed weapons and I feel it might become too powerful.

if logics say its dist why would you even make it possible ot dress shields in an arrow slot. (spellbooks)
 
Seems like the gremlins exp needs raising a little.. They are harder than roaches gettin like 60k less exp from them..

It is the throw weapon slot, and with the book he is THROWING knowledge into his brain, and into his overal stats :)

Books are a new addition, I wanted to place in an alternative to ranged weapons for the people that do not wish to use a bow or staff. Mostly because the ranged slot stats now matter, I felt that decision forced everyone to use a ranged slot item. With spell books in place, people can sacrifice the ranged slot attack for a bit of mana instead.

Edit:
I almost forgot to say, you can also put a ranged/staff weapon in your normal hands and you will be able to shoot it when in melee range.

The only thing you forced people to is to add a script that after it stacked your 100 GP/plat it pushes a book into your arrow slot to hunt with the maximum of your power on :9
