Maybe you should try using more colors because it justs fades from a lighter shade of black to a darker one, not making the outcome look so good.

You can use dark colors but not a black tho, black pixels inside the sprite don't make it clearly lookin'. I'm too busy to explain it but you can always find some tutorials. Unless in the eye, mouth spots, but you have to make it fit there.
