Spyware is a type of malware (malicious software) installed on computers that collects information about users without their knowledge. The presence of spyware is typically hidden from the user and can be difficult to detect. Spyware is often secretly installed on a user's personal computer without their knowledge. However, some spyware such as keyloggers may be installed by the owner of a shared, corporate, or public computer on purpose in order to intentionally monitor users.

While the term spyware suggests software that monitors a user's computing, the functions of spyware can extend beyond simple monitoring. Spyware can collect almost any type of data, including personal information like Internet surfing habits, user logins, and bank or credit account information. Spyware can also interfere with user control of a computer by installing additional software or redirecting Web browsers. Some spyware can change computer settings, resulting in slow Internet connection speeds, un-authorized changes in browser settings or functionality of other software.

Sometimes, spyware is included along with genuine software, and may come from an official software vendor. In an attempt to increase the understanding of spyware, a more formal classification of its included software types is provided by the term privacy-invasive software. In response to the emergence of spyware, a small industry has sprung up dealing in anti-spyware software. Running anti-spyware software has become a widely recognized element of computer security practices for computers, especially those running Microsoft Windows. A number of jurisdictions have passed anti-spyware laws, which usually target any software that is surreptitiously installed to control a user's computer.

the best antivirus in the world is the the user

avoid downloading files in places that are known to serve infected files, some freeware sites are questionable, avoid p2p sites, porn etc........

never run your system in administrative mode, a few seconds on the net it will become an open target, protect your admin account with a password, open and create a limited user account, do not open unkown emails containing files,

if a limited user account becomes infected it can be deleted if removel is impossible, clearing the cache's is an option, in the limited user account it makes anything impossible to install without admin access so the worst it can get is spyware.

surf safe, be safe in a limited user account, after all, your asking for it running as admin online/offline!

edit: to add, the registry cannot be changed without a password, system files cannot be overwritten, programs cant be installed, nothing can be changed unless you allow it to be, software that is installed like nero and other can be used, games even gadgets.

never give anyone full access to your computer, yep not even family or friends, you are the one that makes changes as needed, open seperate user accounts for others, thus avoiding any changes that cannot be fixed, remember a user account can be delete in administrative mode.

this makes it impossible to get trojans/scumware/mailware to gain control of your system.

and Please Don't Use Norton Anti:
I dislike Norton because it comes with 2-tonnes of junk that you'll never need - hence why it costs a billion dollars a year. If you use Norton you can safely disable 90% of it or your computer will be slewed to a grinding halt very quickly.

with regards

I prefer bitdefender for anti's :/
@Ello: Yes the user is the best anti of all but there are certain things that even sometimes an experienced user will miss and that is why it's recommended to have a removal program, as for spyware just get an IDE installed (intruder detection system)

Here is my walk-through on internet safety:
1. Common Sense
2. Common Sense
3. MSE(Micro$oft Security Essentials, for those that don't know.)
4. ?????
4.5. Did I mention Common Sense?
5. PROTECTED!

And there you have it, as you can see, I could not stress any further "Common Sense", the internet, is no different than RL, if you f*ck a dirty whore, expect AIDS, if you walk on the wrong neighborhood, expect to be shot down or mugged. So know your Environment, so you can better protect yourself, also MSE is like having a G18(Automatic)... just in case!

Linux Tutorial:
1. Power PC
2. ?????
3. PROFIT

For best result, Install Gentoo!

Common Sense for me
I install AVG Free once per month or something to see if anything escaped me, then I uninstall, I hate having stuff running in the background

There is no 'best' anti-virus, since they are all changing constantly. None of them will pick up 'everything' since new threats come out into the wild all the time and no company is able to keep up with them.

My personal preference is , The User! is The best anti-virus.

As I stated before the user isn't always the best antivirus, why? Because a user that downloads a file w/o an antivirus installed will have a 1 in about a million (or billion depending on how many folders and files you have) chance of finding and knowing if it's a virus or not and has to use their judgment. A user with a trusted antivirus will have atleast a 1 in about a 100 chance of knowing whether there is a virus and it will automatically be dealt with. So the end user is not always the best choice, especially if they are someone who has no real knowledge about computers and file coding.

so are computer viruses. As "UK Cheap Broadband" magazine advises, even if you don't download anything from the Internet, don't think you're safe from viruses or spyware. The latest viruses are designed to travel from one computer to another across the Internet, on their own. Having antivirus software is therefore a must, but you should know their possible disadvantages before settling on one.

For example, Norten anti-virus.
I dislike Norton because it comes with 2-tonnes of junk that you'll never need - hence why it costs a billion dollars a year. If you use Norton you can safely disable 90% of it or your computer will be slewed to a grinding halt very quickly.

Yes Norton is not worth anyone's time but you are more secure with your computer if you are disconnected from the internet, much more secure since the only way for a virus to infect you is to already have had one hiding in your system waiting for your antivirus to outdate. From being connected the typical user has about 60-70% chance of clicking or opening or downloading something that contains a virus when connected and when not connected the only times they will get a virus is by connecting an infected external device to the system so their chances are little to nil.

We have a team of specialists in the antivirus world.
We participate annually in a number of international organizations For example, Wikipedia

i will give you more info soon in your pm...

Haven't really gotten my pm yet and this is basic security, I still haven't gotten to the firewall settings (or really learned them much yet) to block stuff such as DDOSing and what not. But sure I guess.

Note: I am not referring to anyone, just putting this out there!

so ! do you like say bullshit without reason?
i don't like people like you , I think you are sick.......

Common Sense is huge put a program helps too

I use McAfee Total Protection it slows down my laptop a bit but it comes with virus scanner, site checker (will tell you if the site is trusted or not helps if you lack common sense), online backup, create vaults (different drives that are password protected on your computer), Cleaner/File Shredder (can remove temporary internet history), and when things try to run on your computer its will ask you to allow once, allow always, or block) and some more features.
Its about $50 per year if you have the money its worth it in my opinion.

it slows down my laptop a bit . , huh!!
all anti-virus programs don't without disadvantages !
we need a anti-virus program without disadvantages !
you got one ?
