Bogart, Peroxide and Scarlet Ayleid have been doing an awesome job as board moderators and it is finally their time to become global moderators! We might be opening the staff recruitment board later if we feel that we need new board moderators, but for now you will have to fear our mascot Fury who is the one and only board moderator.

 

It is now over five years since OtLand was launched (fifth birthday was at 27th May, 2012), and we're still growing despite what may be happening to other OpenTibia websites. There is no reason for us to stop.

Today we have updated the forum software, some of our own plugins and the search engine. Some significant changes are:

• Activity stream
• Notification when receiving reputation
• Reputation comments tab in user profiles
• Double post prevention (posts will be merged if 24...

It has come to my attention that XAMPP comes with a security flaw which is exploited through the use of the WebDAV (C:/xampp/webdav) folder. A hacker could upload scripts with malicious code onto your website (a shell for instance or a DoS script), thus gaining full access to the website's files and sometimes on the entire server. Since TFS users have their database credentials in config.lua this, by extension, could give the hacker root access to the database of...

 

We would first like to thank Archez for the time he has spent helping us. He recently resigned from his global moderator position due to lack of time.

It has been a while since an announcement was posted, so I'll try to sum up what we have been working on since the last update. First, we have started writing articles for the upcoming Home page for OtLand, it is intended to help users who are new to OpenTibia to get started, so instead of filling up our support boards with very basic questions, the articles should cover these stuff. I've recently seen alot of users getting hacked, so I've used some of my free time to look into this and I found a "security vulnerability" in phpMyAdmin which comes with XAMPP. The control user pma comes with an empty password as default, and XAMPP does not alert the user about this.

I'm not going to explain in details how you can take advantage of this vulnerability, but to explain it in a single sentence: the user pma has more permissions than it should have.

After a few years of conflicts between us and OTFans we have finally decided that the best thing for the future of OpenTibia is to merge our forums. This will benefit everyone as we will be able to keep all resources at a single place instead of requiring the users to search at different forums to find what they are looking for.

The merge is scheduled to take place in a couple of weeks. More in-depth information will be available in this thread...

 

OtLand has been updated to the latest version of the forum software, and all plugins are now up to date, but that's not all.

With this update, we have brought the "Like tree" feature. You can like posts by clicking on the "Like" link at the bottom right of a post. When a thread has at least one liked post a Like tree will appear at the top, below the page navigation in the thread, where you can see the most liked posts. You will also receive a notification if someone likes your post.

As some of you may have noticed, OtLand was recently unavailable for approximately an hour. This was because we were applying a few changes.

The Rules page - there have been complaints on that the rules are not clear enough for everyone. We have finally taken the time to make the rules more detailed, we have also revised our infraction reasons to fit the rules so that the infraction reason no longer should be confusing. Recently it was found, there's an important security hole in POT (for newbies: Gesior/Unnamed AAC uses it) which displays database connection information. Here's a fast solution for XAMPP users from Xampy, which everyone using POT for their AAC should apply:

Thanks for all the applications, it has been interesting to read most of them and it wasn't an easy task to pick the new moderators... but after having the recruitment board open for a month it was just about time.

After months of planning and working, we have finally launched the update! There are still a lot of things to be fixed but I'll leave that for later.

So what is so special about this update?
The most important changes are the server move and the update to the new major version of vBulletin, 4. OtLand has been moved to a server colocated in Chicago, with a lot more powerful hardware than what our previous server had. We thank everyone that has donated to OtLand for making this...

As you might have noticed, our "mascot" also known as "Fury" has been Otland's logo for a while now. We feel that it's time for Fury to get a makeover and a better look for 2010!
We are searching for creative artists which enjoy drawing.

We have promoted Samme to a global moderator for doing a very good job as a board moderator, and Kula_ has joined the OtLand staff as a board moderator in the Polish board to try to keep that area under control as there has been complaints on the spam there.

In the next weeks we should have our update to vBulletin 4 ready, once we have updated we will start recruiting more staff members. If you are interested to join our staff and help us to enforce the rules you can start helping us...
